The United Kingdom and the United States have secured a major trade agreement that will guarantee zero levies on British drug products going into the US market.

The Terms of the Deal

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to raise spending on medicines through the NHS. This pledge ensures that import taxes on these vital products will be held at nothing for a timeframe of 36 months.

This agreement is in response to earlier threats to dramatically increase import taxes on patented drug imports, with figures discussed up to one hundred percent.

"This arrangement with the UK bolsters the international landscape for innovative medicines and establishes much-needed balance to American-British medicine commerce," a statement said.

Commercial Impact

Medicines represent one of the UK's largest goods shipped to the US, which is easily the primary market for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Statistics indicate that in the 12 months prior to last September, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products worth over eleven billion pounds to the US. This amount accounted for 17.4% of total UK exports in that timeframe.

"This agreement safeguards employment, boosts funding and paves the way for the UK to emerge as a global hub for medical research," a minister remarked.

Key British Pledges

The deal includes several notable pledges from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will lift the affordability limit at which it judges new therapies to be prohibitively costly by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to raise overall public funding on drugs from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The sum pharmaceutical firms must return to the NHS to control costs will be capped at fifteen percent. In the past, rebates exceeded twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

This agreement takes place against a ongoing row between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over spending levels and approval rates.

The disagreement were exacerbated by arguments that US customers were charged several times more for the identical medicines than consumers in the other developed nations.

Recently, several large manufacturing plans in the UK have been halted or scrapped, while major expansions have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

A senior figure publicly accepted that the NHS needed to invest a greater share on medicines, noting that its expenditure on drugs had declined as a share of its total funding over the past decade.
